These are the best books about deaf history or heritage that I have read, or used, or that are recommended by About.com visitors.

1. Deaf Heritage

Jack Gannon's classic book "Deaf Heritage" should be required in every deaf person's household. Although it is now outdated, this well-organized book has a comprehensive overview of deaf history/heritage.

2. Crying Hands

Book about how deaf people (Jewish and others) were treated by the Nazis. Very scholarly and rich with detail.

4. The History of Deaf People: A Source Book

I have not read this book, but it sounds like a useful deaf history book as it covers ancient history through modern times. The publisher, DawnSignPress, even offers sample chapters on their website. ISBN 91-630-6822-2.
