This period novel (set primarily in the thirties) details the life of a deaf family with hearing children. It was later made into a TV movie, "Love is Never Silent."

2. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Although deafness is not the central theme of this book, the central character IS a deaf man, John Singer. This book was also made into a movie of the same name.
